BurnNet Survivors Meeting

The BurnNet Survivors Meeting is a twice monthly meeting where burn survivors and survivors of necrotizing fasciitis, families and significant others discuss issues and raise questions related to their injury.

The meeting is facilitated by the Firefighters Burn Institute Regional Burn Center Burn Outreach Coordinator and a SOAR peer. They provide a relaxed, safe and undisturbed atmosphere, conducive to the needs of all those who attend. UC Davis Medical Center is a Survivors Offering Assistance in Recovery (SOAR) — designated facility, some of our peer support volunteers will serve as a source of hope and inspiration to those impacted by a burn injury. Questions are answered and anxieties related to the injuries can be diminished or alleviated in this safe haven. Useful topics are discussed each month to aid in the participants’ understanding of the various stages of injury, rehabilitation and recovery.

Other specialists are featured in Lunch Bunch sessions, held the second Thursday of each month from 12:00 to 12:30 p.m. They speak to topics like cosmetics, vocational rehabilitation and physical therapy, and reconstructive options. Sign up through our Google Form.

The Firefighters Burn Institute also occasionally hosts a Yoga + Mindfulness, journaling, or light exercise session during some months. Email valorie@ffburn.org for more information or call (916) 739-8525 and ask for Valorie. Walk and Talk Wednesdays are an in-person offering held at Tahoe Park in Sacramento on the third Wednesday of each month from 10:00 – 11:30 AM (weather permitting). No RSVP required; snacks and drinks provided.

Caregiver Support Meetings are scheduled for 2023 and will be posted here. Caregiver Support meetings will be held on Thursdays, March 30, June 29, and August 31 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. via Zoom, register hereEmail valorie@ffburn.org for more information or call (916) 739-8525 and ask for Valorie.

World Burn Congress Scholarship Program

Provided by the Firefighters Burn Institute

The Firefighters Burn Institute provides a limited number of scholarships for burn survivors and the medical professionals that care for them to attend the Phoenix Society’s “World Burn Congress.”  The scholarship typically includes round-trip airfare, hotel costs for approved conference nights and conference registration.

World Burn Congress (WBC) can be a life changing experience, not only for burn survivors, but for their family, friends and caregivers as well. WBC offers a supportive environment for transformational healing and gives those affected by burn injuries the tools to thrive again. Each year hundreds of burn survivors from all over the world come together to share their stories, find resources for their recovery and build a network for support. World Burn Congress is the world’s largest gathering of the burn community, connecting attendees with resources, support, and each other.

The Firefighters Burn Institute is honored to provide scholarships to those in need who would not otherwise be able to experience this life changing conference.  The conference helps burn survivors and their families understand and cope with the physical and emotional challenges associated with burn recovery.  WBC not only offers burn survivors the chance to meet others overcoming similar challenges, but also gives the hope and encouragement to go beyond merely surviving.
